Court Responds to ICE Activity at the Stanislaus County Courthouse

For Immediate Release

Modesto, CA — On July 1, 2025, officers from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) entered the Stanislaus County Courthouse and detained an individual for alleged violations of federal immigration law.

The Superior Court of California, County of Stanislaus, is committed to providing a safe and neutral forum where all individuals regardless of immigration status can resolve legal matters and access essential court services. In accordance with Senate Bill 54 (the California Values Act), court staff and Sheriff's security personnel fully complied with state law, which restricts the use of state and local resources for federal immigration enforcement.

“Federal immigration enforcement activities inside courthouses disrupt court operations, breach public trust, and compromise the Court’s constitutional role as a neutral venue for the peaceful resolution of disputes. These actions create a chilling effect, silencing victims, deterring witnesses, discouraging community members from seeking protection and deterring parties from participating in legal proceedings critical to the rule of law” stated Presiding Judge Sonny S. Sandhu.

The Court has reported the incident to appropriate state authorities. The Court remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of all who enter the courthouse.
